#OscarsMixUp captured the most embarrassing moment in Academy Awards history on February 26, 2017, when La La Land was mistakenly announced as Best Picture winner before the error was corrected mid-acceptance speech, revealing Moonlight as the actual winner.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the award. Beatty opened the envelope, looked confused, stalled, and showed the card to Dunaway, who read “La La Land.” The La La Land team took the stage, speeches began, and then—chaos.

Producers discovered the error and interrupted. “There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture.” Confusion rippled across the stage and audience. The La La Land team graciously handed over their awards. The Moonlight team—shock evident—took the stage.

The error occurred because Beatty had been given the duplicate envelope for Best Actress (Emma Stone, La La Land) instead of Best Picture. He hesitated because the card read “Emma Stone, La La Land,” but Dunaway saw “La La Land” and announced it.

The moment was excruciating, joyous, and historic—broadcast live to millions. Memes comparing Beatty’s confusion to the electoral college immediately flooded social media.

For Moonlight—a small-budget film about Black queer identity—the win was especially significant, though the chaotic announcement diluted what should have been a triumphant moment.
