The Hindu/Indian greeting meaning “I bow to the divine in you” that became global yoga culture’s signature salutation.

Sacred Greeting

Namaste (नमस्ते) is traditional Indian greeting combining “namah” (bow) and “te” (you). It means “I bow to you” or “the divine in me honors the divine in you.” The gesture (anjali mudra—palms together at heart) accompanies the word. Namaste reflects Hindu philosophy recognizing divinity in all beings. It’s used across India, Nepal, and Hindu diaspora.

Yoga Appropriation

As yoga spread globally (2000s-2010s), namaste became Western yoga classes’ default greeting/closing. Instructors ended classes with “namaste,” students responded “namaste.” The practice honored yoga’s Indian origins but also became commodified—yoga pants, namaste jewelry, and “namaste in bed” memes diluted sacred meaning.

Cultural Debate

Indian and Hindu practitioners debated Western namaste use. Some appreciated spreading the word; others saw appropriation—taking spiritual practice’s trappings without understanding Hinduism. COVID-19 made namaste’s contactless greeting practical, increasing Western usage. By 2023, namaste was globally recognized but contested—symbol of both cultural exchange and appropriation.
