South Korean boy group and sub-unit of NCT (Neo Culture Technology), SM Entertainment’s experimental limitless-member group. NCT Dream originally featured teenage members with a graduation concept.

Youth Concept

NCT Dream debuted on August 25, 2016, with “Chewing Gum” — members aged 14-16, representing youthful energy in SM’s NCT universe. The original concept required members to “graduate” upon turning 20 (Korean age), rotating new younger members in.

Original lineup: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, Jisung.

Evolution & Fan Rebellion

2018: Mark graduated per the concept, devastating fans who had grown attached to the seven-member chemistry. The remaining six continued as NCT Dream.

Fan outcry over Mark’s departure led SM to abolish the graduation system in 2020, making NCT Dream a permanent fixed unit. Mark rejoined for “Hot Sauce” (2021) comeback.

Commercial Explosion

Post-reunion success:

  • “Hot Sauce” (May 2021) sold over 2 million copies
  • “Glitch Mode” (March 2022) sold 2.1 million first week
  • “Candy” (December 2022) repackage continued momentum
  • Became the best-selling NCT unit by 2022

Musical Identity

NCT Dream’s sound evolved from youthful, bubblegum pop (“Chewing Gum,” “We Young”) to more mature hip-hop and pop (“Boom,” “Ridin’,” “Hot Sauce”). Their choreography maintained energetic, synchronized precision.

The group represented the “safe” side of NCT’s experimental brand, delivering accessible pop while NCT 127 pursued edgier concepts and WayV targeted Chinese markets.
