Negroni Week transformed a classic Italian aperitif into a global charity phenomenon and craft cocktail staple, raising $4M+ for charities between 2013-2023. #NegroniWeek documented the cocktail’s cultural ascent from niche drink to bartender favorite.

Classic Recipe

The Negroni (equal parts gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, orange peel) was created in 1919 Florence when Count Camillo Negroni asked for a stronger Americano (Campari, vermouth, soda). The drink remained regional until the craft cocktail revival. Its bitter, complex flavor profile made it a bartender favorite — a palate cleanser and test of cocktail knowledge.

Negroni Week Origins

Imbibe Magazine and Campari launched Negroni Week in June 2013 as a charity fundraiser: bars worldwide donated $1+ per Negroni sold to charitable causes. The first year saw 1,200+ bars participate. By 2019, 12,000+ bars across 60+ countries joined, raising $3M+ that year alone.

The campaign’s brilliance: it celebrated an existing cocktail (no new marketing), encouraged variations (Mezcal Negroni, White Negroni, Boulevardier), and united the industry around charity. Social media amplified it — #NegroniWeek trended annually. The cocktail’s photogenic red color and simple recipe made it Instagram-friendly.

Cultural Canonization

By 2018, the Negroni was consistently ranked among the world’s top 5 cocktails. Its bitterness appealed to adventurous drinkers; its simplicity allowed endless variations. The drink became the bartender’s handshake — ordering a Negroni signaled cocktail literacy. Negroni sbagliato (prosecco replaces gin) went viral in 2022 after actress Emma D’Arcy’s interview.

The cocktail proved that charity marketing, industry unity, and a well-crafted classic could create lasting cultural impact. Negroni Week continues annually, cementing the drink’s status as craft cocktail royalty.
