The video doorbell that brought Google’s AI and design excellence to compete with Ring’s first-mover advantage.
Google’s Smart Home Play
Launched March 2018 at $229, Nest Hello was Google’s (Nest) answer to Ring’s video doorbell dominance. It offered 24/7 recording (with Nest Aware subscription), person detection via AI, and integration with Google Assistant. The vertical design captured head-to-toe views better than Ring’s horizontal orientation. Image quality and HDR processing surpassed competitors.
Ring Competition
Ring (owned by Amazon since 2018) dominated video doorbells, but Nest Hello targeted premium buyers willing to pay more for better image quality, AI features, and Google ecosystem integration. Familiar faces recognition, package detection, and pre-recorded quick responses showed Google’s AI advantages. However, the $229 price and required subscription limited mass adoption.
Rebranding and Evolution
Google rebranded Nest Hello as Google Nest Doorbell (battery, 2021; wired, 2022) after absorbing Nest fully. The battery version ($179) made installation easier but reduced always-on recording. Competition intensified with Ring, Arlo, Eufy, and others. By 2023, video doorbells were commodity products, with Nest holding 15-20% market share—solid but not dominant.
