#NikeSB
Nike SB (Skateboarding) launched in 2002 but exploded into mainstream culture in 2019-2021 with the “Dunk Low” craze. Collaborations with Travis Scott, Ben & Jerry’s, and Grateful Dead made SB Dunks the hottest sneaker silhouette of the pandemic era.
Early Years (2002-2015)
Nike SB struggled initially, with skaters skeptical of the corporate giant. But limited releases like the “Tiffany” Dunk (2005) and “Pigeon” Dunk (2005) built cult followings.
The Resurgence (2019-2021)
Travis Scott’s 2019 Dunk collaboration reignited mainstream interest. During COVID-19 lockdowns, SB Dunks became the ultimate flex:
- Travis Scott x Nike SB Dunk Low (2020, resale $2,000+)
- Ben & Jerry’s “Chunky Dunky” (2020, resale $1,800+)
- Grateful Dead x Nike SB Dunk Low (2020, resale $1,500+)
- Supreme x Nike SB Dunk High “Stars” (2021, resale $800+)
Streetwear Crossover
The chunky Dunk silhouette fit perfectly with baggy jeans and oversized hoodies, making it the go-to sneaker for Gen Z streetwear. The SB Dunk became more fashionable than functional for skating.
Market Saturation
By 2022, Nike over-saturated the Dunk market with GR (General Release) colorways, deflating resale prices. The hype shifted to New Balance 550s and Adidas Sambas.
