What Is the NPC Meme?

The “NPC” (Non-Player Character) meme portrays certain people as mindless automatons who can’t think independently — following scripts, repeating talking points, and lacking original thought. The visual shows a gray, featureless Wojak character.

Origins on 4chan

The meme emerged on 4chan’s /pol/ board in September 2018, combining gaming terminology (NPCs are pre-programmed characters in video games) with political critique. It was weaponized primarily against liberals and mainstream media consumers, accusing them of groupthink.

The NPC Wojak’s blank expression symbolized perceived lack of individual reasoning. Critics were depicted as repeating “programming” without critical thinking.

Virality & Backlash

The meme exploded in October 2018, spreading to Twitter where accounts used NPC avatars to mock mainstream opinions. Twitter suspended thousands of NPC accounts for coordinated behavior, sparking censorship debates.

Critics argued the meme was dehumanizing and dismissive of legitimate disagreement. Supporters claimed it satirized conformity and echo chambers.

Decline

By 2019, the NPC meme’s political baggage made it less appealing beyond far-right circles. It’s occasionally resurrected but lacks the viral energy of its 2018 peak.
