Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Disney+ limited series starring Ewan McGregor, premiered May 27, 2022, reuniting fans with the Jedi Master 17 years after Revenge of the Sith.

The Show

Set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, the six-episode series follows Obi-Wan in hiding on Tatooine, watching over young Luke Skywalker. When Leia Organa (Vivien Lyra Blair) is kidnapped by the Inquisitors—Force-sensitive Jedi hunters led by Reva (Moses Ingram)—Obi-Wan emerges from exile, leading to a rematch with Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen).

The series explored Obi-Wan’s trauma, guilt, and broken connection to the Force. The Vader confrontation in Episode 3 and their final duel in Episode 6 delivered emotionally charged fan service.

Controversy & Reception

The series sparked debate. Fans celebrated McGregor and Christensen’s returns, but criticized pacing, writing inconsistencies, and underdeveloped Inquisitors. The chase scene in Episode 1 (Leia running from kidnappers) became a meme for awkward staging.

Moses Ingram faced racist harassment, prompting Lucasfilm to issue a statement condemning the attacks. The controversy overshadowed early episodes.

Despite mixed reviews (82% critics, 61% audience on Rotten Tomatoes), the series became Disney+‘s most-watched premiere at the time, with 2.14 million households in the first weekend.

Cultural Legacy

Episode 6’s “You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker—I did” line became iconic, giving closure to the Obi-Wan/Vader relationship. The series bridged the prequels and original trilogy, recontextualizing Vader’s obsession with finding Obi-Wan in A New Hope.

No Season 2 is planned; Deborah Chow confirmed it was designed as a limited series.
