The standalone VR headset that brought virtual reality to the mainstream by cutting the PC tether and slashing prices.
Breaking Free
Announced May 2019 and launched that same month, the original Oculus Quest solved VR’s biggest barrier: no gaming PC required. At $399 for 64GB, it combined inside-out tracking, hand controllers, and a mobile processor into a wireless headset. Early adopters praised freedom of movement and ease of setup. Beat Saber became the killer app, selling millions of copies.
Quest 2 Breakthrough
Quest 2 (October 2020) changed everything. Facebook (pre-Meta rebrand) subsidized the hardware to $299, undercutting all competitors. Higher resolution (1832x1920 per eye), lighter weight, and improved processing made it the obvious VR choice. By 2021, Quest 2 accounted for 80%+ of VR headset sales. The mandatory Facebook login requirement drew criticism, but sales soared.
Pandemic and Fitness
COVID-19 lockdowns accelerated VR adoption. Quest became home fitness equipment (Supernatural, FitXR), social hangout spaces (VRChat), and work-from-home tools (Horizon Workrooms). By 2022, Meta had sold 15+ million Quest 2 units. The Quest Pro ($1,500, 2022) targeted enterprise but flopped. Quest 3 ($499, 2023) added mixed reality, maintaining Meta’s dominance in a market it now controlled.
