Oculus Quest 2
The Oculus Quest 2 launched October 13, 2020 as Facebook’s standalone VR headset, priced at $299 (64GB) and $399 (256GB)—$100 cheaper than its predecessor. The Quest 2 became the first VR headset to achieve mainstream adoption, selling 15+ million units by 2022 and single-handedly rescuing the VR industry from niche irrelevance.
Technical Breakthrough
The Quest 2 delivered PC-quality VR without wires or external sensors using inside-out tracking, Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, and 1832 x 1920 per-eye resolution at 72-120Hz refresh rates. Weighing 503 grams (17% lighter than Quest 1), the improved comfort and sharper display reduced motion sickness complaints.
Mandatory Facebook Login
Facebook’s controversial requirement to link a Facebook account to use Quest 2 sparked privacy backlash and EU antitrust investigations. Users who violated Facebook community standards risked losing access to $300+ worth of VR games. Oculus enthusiasts accused Facebook of using VR as a data collection platform, not a gaming device.
Killer Apps
Beat Saber became VR’s first mainstream hit (4+ million copies sold), proving rhythm games worked perfectly in VR. Half-Life: Alyx (PC VR via Oculus Link cable) showcased AAA gaming potential. Fitness apps like Supernatural ($19/month subscription) and FitXR positioned Quest 2 as a Peloton competitor, with users losing significant weight.
Social VR & Metaverse
Facebook rebranded to Meta in October 2021, betting $10+ billion annually on VR/AR as the next computing platform. Horizon Worlds (Meta’s social VR space) launched with cringeworthy graphics and empty rooms, becoming a punchline for Zuckerberg’s metaverse vision despite Quest 2’s hardware success.
The Quest 2 proved standalone VR could work at consumer-friendly prices, though content library limitations and Meta’s data practices prevented universal adoption. By 2023 the Quest 2 accounted for 80%+ of Steam VR headset usage.
