Origin

Palmer Luckey launched the Oculus Rift Kickstarter in August 2012, raising $2.4 million to develop a consumer VR headset. The campaign reignited interest in virtual reality after decades of failed attempts, promising affordable, high-quality VR experiences.

Cultural Impact

The Rift made VR feel possible again. Early developer kits shipped in 2013, generating buzz at tech conferences. Facebook’s $2 billion acquisition in March 2014 shocked the industry—why would a social network buy a gaming peripheral? Zuckerberg saw VR as the next computing platform.

The hashtag tracked VR hype cycles: initial excitement, developer experimentation, questions about motion sickness and content scarcity. The consumer Rift launched in 2016 at $599 (plus $1,000+ PC requirements), limiting mainstream adoption but establishing VR’s viability.

Platform Evolution

Peak usage occurred 2012-2016 during Kickstarter, Facebook acquisition, and consumer launch. The Rift brand was discontinued in 2021 as Facebook rebranded to Meta and focused on Quest standalone headsets. The Rift kickstarted the modern VR industry.
