OnlyFansCreator

Twitter 2016-11 business active
Also known as: OnlyFansOFContentCreator

Subscription content platform where creators monetize exclusive photos/videos, became synonymous with adult content despite broader origins.

Founding (2016)

Tim Stokely (UK) launched OnlyFans as general creator platform (fitness, cooking, music). But adult content creators migrated from Patreon, Tumblr (2018 NSFW ban), and Instagram (shadowbanning). By 2019, overwhelmingly adult-oriented.

Business Model

Creators set monthly subscription ($4.99-$49.99 typical). Post content behind paywall. Fans pay to access. Creators can send pay-per-view DMs ($5-$100+). OnlyFans takes 20% cut.

Pandemic Explosion (2020-2021)

Unemployment, stimulus checks, lockdown boredom fueled boom:

  • 85M registered users (2021)
  • 2M+ creators (2021)
  • $2.36B creator payouts (2021)

Mainstream acceptance: Cardi B, Blac Chyna, Bella Thorne joined. “Link in bio” became code for OnlyFans.

Bella Thorne Controversy (August 2020)

Actress joined, earned $1M first day. Posted $200 PPV (pay-per-view) photo, fans expected nudity, got bikini shot. Mass refunds. OnlyFans changed policies: capped tips at $100, delayed payouts. Sex workers blamed her for ruining platform.

The Ban That Wasn’t (August 2021)

OnlyFans announced banning sexually explicit content (August 19, 2021). Creators panicked. 6 days later (August 25), reversed decision after massive backlash. Claimed bank/payment processor pressure. Showed creators’ platform dependency vulnerability.

Mainstream Attempts

OnlyFans launched OFTV (SFW content app, 2021), but failed to shake adult association. Creators on other niches earned little - fitness/cooking couldn’t compete with NSFW monetization.

Worker Dynamics

Top 1% earned 33% of revenue. Median creator: ~$180/month. Successful required constant content, DM engagement (parasocial labor), marketing across Twitter/Instagram/Reddit. Burnout, piracy (content leaked to free sites), harassment common.
