Built-in cooking and entertaining spaces in backyards/patios featuring grills, countertops, refrigerators, and sometimes full kitchens, exploding in popularity 2015-2020 as pandemic outdoor living trend and high-end home amenity.
The Backyard Upgrade
Outdoor kitchens evolved from “guy with a grill” (1990s-2000s) to full entertainment zones (2010s-2020s). High-end versions included built-in gas grills ($2K-8K), stone/stucco islands, granite countertops, mini-fridges, sinks, storage, pizza ovens, and covered pavilions—essentially moving the kitchen outside.
Pinterest in 2013-2017 showed aspirational setups: $30K-60K outdoor kitchens in Mediterranean-style homes. Instagram documented more modest versions: $5K-15K DIY builds with Big Green Egg, concrete counters, and pergola shade. HGTV’s “Yard Crashers” (2008-2014) and similar shows normalized the concept.
COVID-19 Acceleration
The pandemic (2020-2021) supercharged outdoor kitchen demand: restaurants closed, indoor entertaining risky, backyards became entertainment hubs. Contractors reported 6-12 month backlogs. Home Depot/Lowe’s sold out of outdoor kitchen components. The trend spread beyond warm climates into Northern states (though usage season remained short).
By 2022, the market segmented: true outdoor kitchens ($20K-100K permanent structures) versus “outdoor kitchen” marketing (any patio with a grill). The trend reflected pandemic-era home investment and American suburban entertainment culture.
