What It Means

Twice-yearly fashion event (February/March, September/October) where luxury brands showcase Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer collections. Haute couture capital—Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent headline. Part of “Big Four” fashion weeks (NYC, London, Milan, Paris).

Origin & Rise

1973 founding: French Fashion Federation organized first Paris Fashion Week. By 1900s-1920s, Paris couture (Chanel, Poiret) dominated. WWII threatened industry; Christian Dior’s “New Look” (1947) restored supremacy.

Modern era: Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel, 1983-2019), Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano (Dior) defined 1990s-2000s extravagance.

Why It Blew Up

Social media era: Instagram/TikTok turned runway shows into viral content. #PFW trends with 500M+ posts per season. Street style (influencers outside shows) rivals runway.

Celebrity front rows: Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Timothée Chalamet—paparazzi mobs. Celebrities become ambassadors (Blackpink’s Jennie for Chanel, BTS’s Jimin for Dior).

Virgil Abloh’s Off-White (2013+): Streetwear crashed luxury gatekeeping. 2018 Louis Vuitton men’s artistic director appointment—first Black designer at major French house.

Peak Moments

  • 1999 McQueen’s robots: Alexander McQueen’s spray-painted dress (robot arms) at Givenchy
  • 2008 Chanel supermarket: Karl Lagerfeld built full grocery store in Grand Palais
  • 2014 Chanel feminist protest: Models marched with “Ladies First” signs
  • 2018 Virgil Abloh debut: Louis Vuitton Men’s—Kanye West cried front row
  • 2019 Chanel Karl tribute: First show after Lagerfeld’s death—1-minute silence
  • 2020 Coperni spray-on dress: Bella Hadid stood naked, dress sprayed live
  • 2022 Balenciaga mud show: Models walked through mud pit—apocalyptic metaphor

Haute Couture Week

January/July: Separate haute couture shows (hand-sewn, made-to-measure). Chanel, Dior, Schiaparelli, Valentino. Only ~2,000 women worldwide can afford (€100K+ gowns).

Street Style Economy

Influencers outside shows: Chiara Ferragni, Aimee Song, Susie Lau. Brands pay €20K+ for front-row placement. Street style photographers (Tommy Ton, Phil Oh) make careers.

TikTok takeover: 2020s—#ParisFashionWeek TikToks get 1B+ views. Unboxing invites, getting-ready videos, POV content.

Sustainability Debates

Critics: Overproduction, 52-season calendar (fast fashion pressure), carbon footprint. Stella McCartney advocates vegan leather, circular fashion.

Defenders: Paris couture = craftsmanship, not mass market. Hermès Birkin bags last decades.

Economic Impact

Fashion industry: €150B+ annual revenue. Paris Fashion Week generates €1.2B economic impact per season.
