On October 28, 2022, an intruder broke into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home seeking to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, instead attacking her 82-year-old husband Paul with hammer, fracturing his skull. The attacker, radicalized by conspiracy theories, intended to break Nancy’s kneecaps to “show other members of Congress there would be consequences.”
The hashtag accompanied horror at political violence against elected officials’ families. Disturbingly, some Republicans mocked the attack or spread conspiracy theories. The incident highlighted how online extremism translates to real-world violence and the danger facing public officials.
