#PeriscopeLiveStreaming documents Periscope, Twitter’s live-streaming app (2015-2021) that briefly popularized mobile live video before being absorbed into Twitter and eventually shut down as competitors like Instagram Live and Twitch dominated.

Early Live Video Boom

Twitter acquired Periscope for $100 million in January 2015, launching it in March. The app enabled anyone to broadcast live video from smartphones, with viewers sending hearts and comments in real-time. Early adoption was enthusiastic—musicians live-streaming concerts, journalists broadcasting protests, regular users showing daily life. Periscope democratized live broadcasting previously requiring expensive equipment.

Competition & Decline

Meerkat (competing live app) launched first but Periscope’s Twitter integration crushed it. However, Facebook Live (2016), Instagram Live (2016), and YouTube Live’s improvements created crowded market. Periscope struggled differentiating from Twitter’s native live video (Twitter essentially duplicated Periscope features within main app). By 2020, Periscope usage had declined significantly—most users preferred Instagram/Facebook’s larger audiences.

Shutdown & Legacy

Twitter announced Periscope’s shutdown in December 2020, fully ending service in March 2021. The company cited declining usage and maintenance costs. Periscope’s features lived on in Twitter Spaces (audio) and Twitter Live. The app pioneered mobile live streaming that became standard on every social platform. The hashtag preserved Periscope’s brief moment as live video innovator before bigger platforms absorbed the functionality.
