Overview
Persian Cat, the flat-faced longhaired breed with luxurious coats, maintained popularity 2010s before declining amid health concerns. The breed’s extreme facial structure caused breathing problems similar to flat-faced dogs.
Breed Characteristics
Long flowing coat, flat face, small nose, large eyes, stocky build, docile temperament. Weight 7-12 pounds, lifespan 12-17 years (often shortened by health issues).
Grooming Demands
Daily brushing essential (mats form quickly), monthly baths, eye cleaning (tear staining), face wiping (flat faces prone to food/moisture buildup).
Health Crisis
Brachycephalic syndrome, dental problems (malocclusion), polycystic kidney disease (PKD), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), breathing difficulties.
“Traditional” vs. “show” Persian split—traditional (doll-face) Persian have less extreme features, fewer health problems.
Decline in Popularity
Dropped from #1 cat breed (2015) to #4 (2023) as awareness of health issues grew. Veterinary organizations discouraged extreme flat-faced breeding.
