The Genus Takeover
While heartleaf philodendron (P. hederaceum) served as an easy-care staple, the philodendron world exploded with climbing and self-heading varieties: Birkin (white pinstripes), Pink Princess (pink variegation), Micans (velvety leaves), Brasil (yellow stripes), Melanochrysum (black velvet), and Gloriosum (white veins).
Instagram plant influencers from 2017 onward fueled demand for rare varieties. Philodendron Pink Princess peaked at $500-1,000 per plant in 2020 before tissue culture labs flooded the market, crashing prices by 2021.
The Speculation Bubble
The #RarePlants movement 2019-2021 turned philodendrons into speculative assets. Philodendron Spiritus Sancti (one of Earth’s rarest plants) sold for $9,000+ per cutting. The bubble burst in late 2021 as tissue culture propagation democratized access.
