The Obama Staffers Who Built the Resistance™

Pod Save America (launched January 2017, days before Trump’s inauguration) transformed former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, and Tommy Vietor into progressive media moguls. The show’s irreverent, insider perspective—policy analysis mixed with sarcastic Trump commentary—gave Democrats coping mechanisms during Trump years. “Pod Save” became verb (“pod-save-broing”) for liberal political podcasting’s style: earnest progressivism wrapped in ironic detachment.

Crooked Media (their company) launched spinoffs—Pod Save the World (foreign policy), Lovett or Leave It (comedy-politics), Keep It (culture)—building liberal podcast empire. The shows’ organizing emphasis (Get Out The Vote campaigns, fundraising for Democratic candidates) blurred media/activism lines, with critics arguing this undermined journalistic objectivity. Fans countered that objectivity was dead—better honest partisanship than false neutrality.

The 2020 Biden victory felt like Pod Save America’s vindication, but post-Trump the show struggled with relevance. Without Trump to oppose, what was progressive podcasting’s purpose? The Biden administration’s insider-critique discomfort revealed tensions between Democratic loyalty and journalistic scrutiny. By 2023, the show remained influential but less culturally dominant—proof that resistance politics required a villain.
