Overview
Positions is Ariana Grande’s sixth studio album, released October 30, 2020. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 174,000 album-equivalent units, making Grande the first artist since Drake to have five consecutive #1 debuts. The title track debuted at #1 on the Hot 100, her fifth #1 single.
R&B Evolution
Positions marked Grande’s shift toward sultry R&B and trap-soul production, moving away from the pop maximalism of thank u, next. Singles “34+35” (sexual innuendo), “POV” (self-love), and “my hair” (intimacy) showcased Grande’s vocal versatility and mature themes.
Presidential Humor
The album cover and “positions” music video featured Grande as President, timed with the 2020 US election. Her satirical portrayal of political power while singing about sexual positions became a viral cultural moment. The album received Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album.
