Overview
Product Hunt is a website and community for discovering new tech products, launched November 2013 by Ryan Hoover and acquired by AngelList for ~$20 million in 2016. The platform became the de facto launchpad for startups, apps, and side projects seeking early adopters and tech influencer validation.
How It Works
Every day at midnight PST, the leaderboard resets. Makers submit products, users upvote and comment, and the top products gain visibility to 6+ million monthly visitors. Being #1 Product of the Day/Week/Month became a badge of honor, driving thousands of signups and media coverage.
Cultural Impact
Product Hunt democratized product launches — you didn’t need PR firms or TechCrunch coverage to get discovered. Indie hackers, solopreneurs, and bootstrapped startups found audiences alongside VC-backed companies.
Notable launches: Figma, Notion, Clubhouse, Superhuman, Linear, Substack, Loom, Airtable, and Zapier all gained early traction through Product Hunt. The “Product Hunt launch” became a startup rite of passage.
Strategy & Gaming
A cottage industry emerged around “Product Hunt launch strategies”: coordinating upvotes from Slack groups, timing launches for low-competition days, DMing influencers for support. Some called it community-building; others called it vote manipulation.
