Progressive house is a subgenre of house music characterized by gradual buildups, layered melodies, euphoric drops, and epic song structures (often 6-10 minutes). Artists like Deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Above & Beyond, and Swedish House Mafia popularized progressive house in the 2010s EDM boom.

2010s EDM Era

Progressive house became festival anthems, with tracks like Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child,” Avicii’s “Levels,” and Alesso’s “Heroes” dominating mainstages. The genre’s emotional builds and melodic drops created crowd sing-alongs and hands-in-the-air moments.

Eric Prydz & Underground Prog

While mainstream progressive house became pop-oriented, Eric Prydz (and his Pryda alias) maintained underground credibility with hypnotic, minimal progressive tracks. His EPIC live shows featured cutting-edge production and extended sets. Labels like Anjunabeats championed melodic progressive house.

Evolution & Influence

By the late 2010s, progressive house blended with melodic techno (Stephan Bodzin, Tale of Us), creating deeper, darker variants. The genre’s influence on pop music (The Chainsmokers, Calvin Harris) brought electronic production to mainstream radio.
