RamenBurger - Noodle Bun Innovation
The ramen burger—burger patty sandwiched between crispy ramen “buns”—became 2013-2014 viral food phenomenon, spawning lines and imitators before fading as novelty.
Creation
Keizo Shimamoto created it for Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg food market (August 2013). Ramen noodles formed into patty shape, pan-fried crispy, used as buns. Instantly viral—2-hour waits for $8 burger.
Media Frenzy
Time Magazine’s “17 Best Inventions of 2013” (alongside Cronut). Major media coverage. Shimamoto opened pop-ups nationwide. Licensed to restaurants globally (Japan especially embraced it).
Hybrid Food Peak
Part of 2013-2015 hybrid food craze: Cronut (2013), sushi burrito (2012), ramen taco. Instagram era rewarded visual novelty. Food trucks competed on creativity over quality.
Decline
By 2015, felt gimmicky. Soggy bun problems, impractical to eat, novelty wore off. Shimamoto’s restaurants closed. Lesson: viral ≠ sustainable.
