Overview
Raw Dog Food Diet, also called BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Food), advocates feeding dogs raw meat, bones, organs, and vegetables instead of commercial kibble. The movement gained traction throughout the 2010s-2020s despite veterinary warnings about health risks.
BARF Diet Philosophy
Developed by Australian veterinarian Dr. Ian Billinghurst (1993), BARF diet argues dogs should eat:
- Raw muscle meat (chicken, beef, lamb)
- Raw meaty bones (chicken wings, necks)
- Organs (liver, kidney)
- Raw eggs
- Vegetables/fruits (blended)
- Minimal grains/carbohydrates
Proponents claim dogs’ digestive systems evolved for raw meat, citing wolves and wild canines. Benefits allegedly include:
- Shinier coats
- Healthier teeth
- Improved digestion
- Increased energy
- Reduced allergies
Social Media Growth & Community
Facebook groups like “Raw Feeding Community” (500K+ members) and Instagram accounts sharing meal prep photos (#RawFeedingCommunity, 2M+ posts) grew exponentially 2015-2020.
Raw feeders photograph elaborate meals—ground meat patties with organ blends, whole prey items, and carefully balanced recipes. The aesthetic resembles human meal prep content, elevating pet food to culinary art.
Veterinary Opposition & Health Risks
Major veterinary organizations (AVMA, FDA, CDC) oppose raw feeding due to:
Bacterial Contamination - Raw meat carries Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria. Studies show 80%+ of raw dog food samples test positive for harmful bacteria.
Human Health Risk - Dogs shed bacteria in saliva and feces, endangering households (especially children, elderly, immunocompromised).
Nutritional Imbalance - Homemade diets often lack proper calcium-phosphorus ratios, vitamins, and minerals unless formulated by veterinary nutritionists.
Bone Hazards - Cooked bones splinter dangerously, but raw bones can still cause choking, intestinal blockages, and tooth fractures.
Thyroid Hormone Contamination - Raw diets including thyroid glands can cause hyperthyroidism.
Scientific Evidence & Studies
2013 FDA Study - Found 15 brands of raw pet food contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria.
2019 Netherlands Study - Tested 35 commercial raw products; 80% contained bacteria exceeding safe limits, 20% contained E. coli, 54% Listeria.
2018 Study - Raw-fed dogs shed antibiotic-resistant bacteria at higher rates than kibble-fed dogs.
No peer-reviewed studies validate claimed health benefits (coat quality, teeth, allergies) beyond anecdotal reports.
Commercial Raw Food Industry
Raw pet food became $1B+ industry by 2020. Companies like:
- Stella & Chewy’s
- Primal Pet Foods
- Instinct Raw
- Northwest Naturals
- SmallBatch
These brands claim safety via high-pressure processing (HPP) or freeze-drying, though contamination recalls still occur periodically.
”Prey Model Raw” vs. BARF
Prey Model Raw (PMR) - Feeds whole prey items (rabbits, chickens, quail) or approximates whole prey ratios: 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other organs. Excludes vegetables/fruits.
BARF - Includes blended vegetables, fruits, and sometimes dairy/eggs. More flexible, less rigid ratios.
Both communities critique kibble as “processed junk food” while veterinarians counter that commercial diets undergo feeding trials and nutritional analysis.
Cultural Divide
Raw feeding created tribal division:
- Raw feeders view kibble feeders as uninformed
- Veterinarians warn raw feeders risk pet and human health
- Compromise: freeze-dried raw or lightly cooked diets
The movement reflects broader trends: natural/organic preferences, distrust of “Big Pet Food,” and desire for control over pet nutrition.
