#Razer: RGB Everything

A gaming peripheral company transformed PC gaming aesthetics—pioneering the RGB-lit, snake-logoed “gamer aesthetic” that defined a generation of setups.

The Gaming Focus

Razer was founded in 1998 but gained mainstream popularity in the 2010s as esports and streaming exploded. The company positioned itself as “by gamers, for gamers”—building peripherals specifically for competitive gaming.

The iconic triple-snake logo became synonymous with gaming culture. Razer’s signature green and black branding was instantly recognizable.

The RGB Revolution

Razer pioneered customizable RGB lighting in peripherals. Chroma technology (2014) let users sync lighting across all Razer devices—keyboards, mice, headsets, mousepads, even PC cases.

The aesthetic was polarizing: enthusiasts loved the customization; critics called it garish and unnecessary. But RGB became standard gaming gear, and Razer led the charge.

The Product Ecosystem

Razer sold everything: mice (DeathAdder, Viper), keyboards (BlackWidow, Huntsman), headsets (Kraken), laptops (Blade), chairs, backpacks, and even Razer-branded energy drinks.

The strategy created brand loyalists with full Razer setups. The ecosystem integration (Synapse software controlling all devices) encouraged buying multiple products.

The Meme Culture

Razer’s aggressive gamer branding made it meme fodder. The company leaned into it, engaging with internet culture through social media, sponsoring streamers, and creating viral marketing campaigns.

Razer’s April Fools’ jokes (Project Breadwinner toaster, RGB face mask) generated massive engagement, some products even becoming real (the toaster launched in 2021).

The Business

Razer went public in 2017 (Hong Kong Stock Exchange), valued at $3+ billion. The company’s success proved gaming peripherals could be premium luxury products, not commodity hardware.

By 2020, Razer dominated gaming retail—their products occupied entire sections at Best Buy and specialized gaming stores.
