Red Rising (Pierce Brown)

Dystopian sci-fi trilogy (later expanded to six books) about Darrow, a Red miner on Mars who infiltrates the ruling Golds in a brutal academy to spark revolution. Published in 2014, it became the defining adult sci-fi series of the 2010s—The Hunger Games meets Ender’s Game with Roman Empire politics.

The Color-Coded Caste System

Society divided by genetic color castes:

  • Golds: Ruling class, genetically perfected warriors/rulers
  • Reds: Slaves mining helium-3 beneath Mars, told they’re pioneers terraforming for humanity
  • Obsidians: Bred warriors
  • Grays: Military/police
  • Blues, Greens, Oranges, Violets, Yellows, Coppers, Whites, Pinks: Specialized labor castes

Darrow discovers Reds’ slavery is a lie—Mars is already terraformed, and Golds live in luxury on the surface.

The Institute: Hunger Games for Adults

Darrow is carved (surgically transformed into a Gold) and sent to the Institute—a year-long battle school where Gold teens are dropped into war games. Houses fight for dominance, alliances shift, and only the ruthless survive.

The series escalates from school war games (Book 1) to solar system-wide revolution (Books 2-6).

Why It Dominated Sci-Fi

  • Brutality: No YA softening—graphic violence, war crimes, moral compromise
  • Complex politics: House intrigue, shifting alliances, realpolitik
  • Character depth: Darrow isn’t a pure hero; he commits atrocities
  • World-building: Greco-Roman culture meets far-future tech
  • No chosen one: Darrow succeeds through strategy, brutality, and luck

The Series Expansion

Original trilogy (2014-2016):

  1. Red Rising
  2. Golden Son
  3. Morning Star

Sequel trilogy (2018-2024): 4. Iron Gold (10 years later, new POVs)
5. Dark Age (darkest book, controversial)
6. Light Bringer (2023)

Fans divided over sequel trilogy’s darker tone and Darrow’s declining heroism.

The series proved adult sci-fi could be commercially successful without film/TV adaptation (though one’s in development). It filled the Hunger Games-sized hole for readers who aged out of YA.
