#RedditSecretSanta celebrates Reddit’s annual Secret Santa gift exchange (2009-2021)—the world’s largest Secret Santa program reaching 200,000+ participants—that demonstrated internet strangers’ capacity for generosity before Reddit shut it down in 2021.
Origins & Growth
Reddit user kickme444 organized the first Reddit Secret Santa in December 2009 with 4,000 participants. The concept: Redditors signed up, were matched randomly with another user globally, exchanged addresses, and mailed gifts ($20 suggested minimum). Participants shared unboxing photos and thank-you posts. The exchange grew exponentially: 2010 (17K), 2011 (30K), 2013 (90K), reaching peak 200K+ participants. Guinness World Records recognized it as “world’s largest Secret Santa program.”
Celebrity Participation & Memorable Gifts
Bill Gates participated multiple years, sending elaborate gift packages (books, donations to recipient’s chosen charity, personalized notes). Other celebrities including Snoop Dogg, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Neil Patrick Harris joined. Some Santas sent extravagant gifts—computers, gaming systems, signed memorabilia. Others personalized thoughtful packages based on recipient’s Reddit history. The exchanges spawned heartwarming stories: Santas sending needed items to recipients in financial hardship, cross-cultural connections, and lasting friendships.
Expansion & Shutdown
RedditGifts expanded beyond Secret Santa to themed exchanges (books, snacks, postcards, arbitrary day). However, Reddit announced in June 2021 that RedditGifts would shut down after 2021’s final exchange. Reddit claimed integration difficulties with new platform architecture, but users suspected monetization challenges—the program required substantial infrastructure with little revenue. The shutdown devastated participants who viewed it as Reddit’s heart and soul.
