Afrobeats’ Billboard Hot 100 Breakthrough
Rema’s “Calm Down” (2022) and its Selena Gomez remix became Afrobeats’ biggest US crossover hit, reaching #3 on Billboard Hot 100—the highest-charting African artist-led song in US history. The Nigerian singer’s melodic Afrobeats track resonated globally via TikTok, with the Selena Gomez remix (2022) pushing it to 1 billion+ Spotify streams.
Rema (Divine Ikubor), discovered by D’Prince (Don Jazzy’s brother) in 2019, pioneered “Afrorave”—his term for blending Afrobeats with Indian, Arabic, and trap influences. His 2023 debut album “Rave & Roses” and Ultra versions cemented his status as Afrobeats’ Gen Z innovator. “Calm Down” proved Afrobeats could dominate US pop radio without sacrificing Nigerian identity—sung primarily in English but unmistakably African in production and vocal melody.
