Reservation Dogs (2021-2023) made history as the first television series written, directed, and starring entirely Indigenous creators and actors. Co-created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the series followed four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma raising money to escape to California.

The ensemble—Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), Elora (Devery Jacobs), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor)—navigated grief, poverty, identity, and community with humor and tenderness. Their dead friend Daniel’s spirit (Dalton Cramer) appeared throughout, representing unprocessed trauma.

The show avoided stereotypes about reservation life—no mystical Indians or poverty porn. Instead, it depicted normal teenage concerns (crushes, rivalry with other crews, stealing chips from a convenience store) grounded in Muscogee Nation culture.

Zahn McClarnon’s Officer Big became a fan favorite—a scene-stealing cop navigating small-town policing with wisecracking authority. His spinoff potential was obvious.

Season 3’s finale saw the characters choosing to stay in Oklahoma rather than flee, reclaiming their community. The show’s portrayal of intergenerational healing, land connection, and Indigenous futurism (imagining Indigenous people with agency and futures) challenged deficit narratives.

Reservation Dogs won a Peabody Award and influenced Hollywood’s approach to Indigenous representation—hiring Indigenous creators rather than consulting them.
