Resistance bands — elastic bands providing variable tension — exploded from rehabilitation tool to mainstream fitness equipment through Instagram bootie workouts, travel fitness, and home gym culture. The bands’ portability, affordability ($10-30), and joint-friendly resistance made them accessible to beginners intimidated by weights while offering legitimate training stimulus.

Band types included: loop bands (continuous circle, primarily for lower body), tube bands with handles (full-body exercises), pull-up assist bands (thick loops supporting bodyweight), and mini bands (small loops for glute activation). Resistance ranged from light (5-15 lbs equivalent) to heavy (60+ lbs).

Instagram fitness culture weaponized bands for glute training: banded squats, lateral walks, kickbacks, and hip thrusts. The constant tension and peak contraction (hardest at maximum stretch) created intense glute pump. Influencers posted banded booty workouts generating millions of views and driving band sales.

Beyond glutes, bands worked for: pull-aparts (shoulder health), banded push-ups (accommodating resistance), assisted pull-ups, band rows, and mobility/activation work. Travelers packed bands for hotel workouts. Physical therapists used bands for rehabilitation progressions.

Limitations included: variable resistance (tension increases with stretch, may not match strength curve), difficulty tracking progressive overload, shorter lifespan than weights (latex degrades), and limited strength-building compared to free weights. But for accessory work, activation, and convenience, resistance bands remained valuable tool.
