Rihanna’s Super Bowl LVII halftime show on February 12, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, marking her first live performance in seven years. The show featured Rihanna performing her greatest hits on floating platforms while visibly pregnant with her second child, becoming the most-watched halftime show ever with 118.7 million viewers.
The Return
Rihanna hadn’t released an album since “Anti” (2016) or performed live since 2018. Her Super Bowl performance was a cultural event—fans desperate to see her again, speculation about new music, and anticipation at a fever pitch. She delivered a medley of 13 songs in 13 minutes, showcasing her unmatched hit catalog.
The Pregnancy Reveal
Mid-performance, Rihanna revealed her baby bump, confirming her second pregnancy with A$AP Rocky. The reveal went viral instantly, becoming one of the most-discussed Super Bowl moments. Rihanna’s decision to perform pregnant was celebrated as a statement about motherhood and femininity.
The Staging
Rihanna performed on floating platforms that rose and descended, creating a futuristic, otherworldly aesthetic. Dressed in red (her Fenty brand), she was surrounded by dancers in white, creating striking visual contrast. The show felt intimate despite the massive scale, with Rihanna’s star power carrying the performance.
Cultural Impact
The show became the most-watched halftime show in history (118.7 million viewers, surpassing Shakira/J.Lo’s 104 million). It reignited calls for new Rihanna music, though none came. The performance cemented her status as pop royalty and proved her star power remained unmatched despite years away.
