White Fragility
“White Fragility” (2018) by Robin DiAngelo became 2020’s anti-racism bestseller, selling 4+ million copies during George Floyd protests. The book explored white people’s defensive reactions when confronted with racism.
Premise
DiAngelo, a white diversity consultant, argued white people exhibit “fragility” when discussing racism—defensiveness, anger, silence—shutting down conversations. She prescribed self-examination, listening to POC, and acknowledging complicity in systemic racism.
2020 Explosion
Floyd’s murder (May 2020) sparked anti-racism reading movement. “White Fragility,” Ibram X. Kendi’s “How to Be an Antiracist,” and “So You Want to Talk About Race” became mandatory reads. Corporate diversity trainings assigned DiAngelo’s book. It stayed #1 for weeks.
Backlash
Critics (including Black scholars) argued DiAngelo’s framework was reductive, self-serving (white woman profiting from racism discussions), and reinforced racial essentialism. The book’s performative white guilt approach felt shallow by 2021-2022, though sales remained strong.
