Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea followed Ukraine’s Euromaidan Revolution, triggering ongoing war in eastern Ukraine, international sanctions, and geopolitical crisis previewing the 2022 full-scale invasion. The annexation violated international law, prompted Western sanctions, and marked Putin’s most aggressive move since Georgia 2008.

Euromaidan Revolution (November 2013-February 2014)

President Viktor Yanukovych’s November 21, 2013 decision to abandon EU association agreement (under Russian pressure) sparked protests in Kiev’s Maidan Square. Demonstrations grew to hundreds of thousands despite brutal crackdowns killing 100+ protesters (“Heavenly Hundred”).

February 22, 2014: Yanukovych fled to Russia after parliament voted to remove him. Pro-Western interim government took power, alarming Putin about losing Ukraine’s geopolitical alignment.

”Little Green Men” & Crimea Annexation

Late February 2014: Unmarked Russian troops (“little green men” due to lacking insignia) seized Crimean parliament and military bases. Putin denied Russian military involvement despite obvious evidence.

March 16 referendum (condemned as sham by international observers): 97% voted to join Russia on 83% turnout. Western nations rejected results as illegitimate, conducted under military occupation with no “status quo” option.

March 18: Putin signed annexation treaty. The first forcible change to European borders since WWII.

Eastern Ukraine War (Donbas)

Pro-Russian separatists seized government buildings in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts (April 2014), declaring “people’s republics.” Russia provided weapons, fighters, and direct military support (denied until later).

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 shot down by Russian BUK missile July 17, 2014, killing 298 civilians. Russia denied responsibility despite overwhelming evidence.

Minsk Agreements (September 2014, February 2015) attempted ceasefires, never fully implemented. By 2022, the conflict killed 14,000+.

Western Sanctions

U.S., EU, and allies imposed sectoral sanctions on Russian energy, finance, and defense sectors. Individual sanctions targeted Putin allies. Russia retaliated with food import bans. Economic warfare intensified through 2023.

The 2022 Escalation

February 24, 2022: Russia launched full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the largest European war since 1945. The 2014 annexation was prelude to Putin’s broader territorial ambitions.
