The Hashtag

#Santorini became synonymous with Instagram travel: iconic blue-domed churches against whitewashed buildings and Aegean blue, attracting millions despite the island’s 15,000-person capacity.

Origins

Santorini was always touristy, but Instagram turned it into pilgrimage. The three blue domes of Oia became the most photographed church in the world, though most visitors didn’t know its name (Agios Spyridonas and two others nearby).

By 2015, tourists outnumbered locals 100-to-1 during summer. Cruise ships dumped 10,000+ day-trippers who stampeded to photograph the exact same spot.

Cultural Impact

The Instagram Santorini checklist:

  • Blue dome photos (fighting crowds for the angle)
  • Caldera infinity pool shots
  • White cave house exteriors
  • Donkey rides down cliff paths (animal welfare concerns)
  • Sunset in Oia (thousands watching together)
  • Blue and white door backgrounds
  • Floating breakfast in pool

The reality:

  • Lines to photograph the blue domes
  • Influencers blocking paths for 30-minute photoshoots
  • Hotels charging $1,000+/night in summer
  • 5-hour wait for sunset spots in Oia
  • Cruise ship passengers overwhelming the island
  • Donkeys collapsing from overwork in heat
  • Infrastructure buckling under tourist weight

Environmental impact:

  • Water scarcity (desalination plants necessary)
  • Sewage system overwhelmed
  • Cliff erosion from foot traffic
  • Marine ecosystem damage from cruise ships
  • Local housing crisis (everything converted to Airbnb)

Greece attempted solutions:

  • Cruise ship passenger caps (8,000/day max)
  • Entry fees proposed (never implemented)
  • Donkey weight limits enforced
  • Promoting shoulder season travel
  • Highlighting other Cycladic islands

COVID emptied Santorini. Locals called it relief. But 2022-2023 saw tourism return to pre-pandemic levels. The blue domes, weathered by millions of photos, remained Instagram’s most coveted backdrop.
