Origins
Scindapsus pictus, commonly called Satin Pothos or Silver Pothos, is a trailing vine with silver-splashed leaves. It became a collector’s favorite 2019-2021 as a more interesting alternative to regular Pothos.
Why It Became Popular (2019-2021)
Appeal:
- Silver variegation (shimmery, unique)
- Easy care (tolerates low light, neglect)
- Trailing/climbing growth
- Affordable ($15-30 for 4-6” pot)
- More interesting than Golden Pothos
Instagram growth: 30K posts (2018) → 250K+ posts (2021).
Varieties
Common:
- Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’ (small silver spots, $15-25)
- Scindapsus pictus ‘Exotica’ (larger silver patches, $20-35)
Rare:
- Scindapsus pictus ‘Silvery Anne’ (almost entirely silver, $40-100)
- Scindapsus treubii ‘Moonlight’ (silver-gray leaves, $60-150)
- Scindapsus treubii ‘Dark Form’ (dark green, $40-80)
Care Simplicity
Scindapsus proved easier than its looks suggest:
- Slower growth than Pothos (but more forgiving)
- Water when dry (drought-tolerant)
- Low-medium light (thrives)
- Propagates easily in water
The Silvery Anne Hunt (2020-2021)
Silvery Anne became a holy grail plant:
- Almost entirely silver leaves
- Sold out within minutes online
- Resold for $80-150+ on Etsy/Facebook
- Eventually tissue-cultured, prices dropped to $40-60
Cultural Impact
Scindapsus attracted plant parents who wanted something more interesting than Pothos but easier than Alocasia. The sweet spot of beauty + simplicity.
