Seed starting empowered gardeners to grow varieties unavailable at nurseries, save money, and extend growing seasons by starting indoors.

The Setup

Basic seed starting: seed trays, seed starting mix (fine, sterile), moisture dome (humidity), light source (south window or grow lights), heat mat (optional, for warm-season crops).

YouTube channels (MIgardener, Epic Gardening, CaliKim29) from 2012 onward taught: when to start (count back from last frost), transplanting seedlings, hardening off (acclimating to outdoors).

Grow Lights

The grow light market exploded 2015-2020: T5 fluorescents, LED panels, full-spectrum bulbs. Reddit’s r/IndoorGarden and YouTube reviews compared options.

For serious growers, LED strips (cheaper, cooler, energy-efficient) replaced old-school fluorescents.

Common Mistakes

Beginner errors flooded forums: overwatering (damping off disease kills seedlings), insufficient light (leggy seedlings), starting too early (overgrown seedlings before outdoor planting), and transplant shock.

The “hardening off” process (gradually exposing seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days) proved critical but often skipped.
