#Severance
Severance, Apple TV+‘s sci-fi thriller created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller, premiered February 18, 2022, and redefined prestige TV with its dystopian workplace horror.
The Show
Mark Scout (Adam Scott) works at Lumon Industries, where employees undergo “severance”—a surgical procedure that splits their consciousness into “innie” (work self) and “outie” (home self). Innies have no memory of life outside Lumon; outies have no memory of work. When Mark’s innie discovers disturbing truths about Lumon, he leads a rebellion.
The nine-episode first season combined Kafkaesque bureaucracy, retro-futurist design, and existential dread with mystery box storytelling. Patricia Arquette (Harmony Cobel), John Turturro (Irving), Britt Lower (Helly), and Christopher Walken (Burt) anchored the ensemble.
Cultural Impact
Severance became a phenomenon for its oppressive corporate aesthetics—sterile white hallways, cult-like rituals (Melon Parties, Music Dance Experience), and monotonous data refinement tasks that felt like satire of real office culture.
The finale’s “overtime contingency protocol” sequence—where innies “wake up” in their outie lives—delivered one of TV’s most suspenseful cliffhangers.
Fans obsessed over Lumon lore, creating theories about the “goats,” waffle parties, and the mysterious Kier Erickson. The show’s production design (led by Jeremy Hindle) won an Emmy for its brutalist, analog aesthetic.
Reception & Awards
Critics hailed it (97% Rotten Tomatoes), praising its originality and patience. It won Emmys for Direction, Editing, and Main Title Design. Adam Scott’s understated performance earned acclaim.
Season 2 was greenlit quickly; production began in 2023, with a 2025 release planned.
