Sonos Wireless Speakers
Sonos pioneered whole-home wireless audio starting with the ZonePlayer (2005), but achieved mainstream success with Sonos Play:5 (2009) and Play:1 (2013, $199). The multi-room system let users sync music across speakers wirelessly, controlling playback via intuitive mobile app. Sonos sold 10+ million speakers by 2020, cementing status as the premium home audio brand.
Ecosystem Strategy
Sonos built a walled garden: speakers only worked within Sonos ecosystem, forcing customers to buy additional Sonos products for multi-room audio. The proprietary mesh network (SonosNet) bypassed WiFi congestion but locked users in. This strategy maximized lifetime value but alienated tinkerers who preferred open standards.
Streaming Service Partnerships
Sonos supported 100+ music services (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Pandora) with native integration—no Bluetooth required. The app aggregated all services into one interface. AirPlay 2 support (2018) allowed iPhone users to stream any audio to Sonos speakers, finally adding Bluetooth-like flexibility.
Voice Assistant Integration
Sonos One (2017, $199) added Alexa support, later Google Assistant (2019). The speaker competed with HomePod on audio quality at $150 less. Sonos Arc soundbar (2020, $799) and Roam portable speaker (2021, $179) expanded the ecosystem beyond stationary speakers.
Planned Obsolescence Controversy
Sonos bricked legacy speakers (2020) by ending software support for devices as recent as 2011, forcing customers to upgrade or lose functionality. The “Recycle Mode” required destroying old speakers to receive trade-in discounts. Backlash forced Sonos to reverse course and extend legacy device support.
Patent Lawsuits
Sonos sued Google (2020) for stealing multi-room audio patents implemented in Nest speakers. The ITC ruled in Sonos’s favor (2022), validating its patent portfolio. Similar lawsuits targeted Amazon over Echo multi-room features. Sonos positioned itself as innovator victimized by Big Tech copying.
