PlayStation VR
PlayStation VR (PSVR) launched October 13, 2016 for $399 as Sony’s VR headset for PlayStation 4, offering affordable console VR versus PC-tethered HTC Vive ($799) and Oculus Rift ($599). The PSVR sold 5+ million units by 2020, becoming the best-selling VR headset until Oculus Quest 2 surpassed it in 2021.
Console VR Accessibility
PSVR democratized VR by leveraging PS4’s 100+ million install base—no $1,500 gaming PC required. The $399 price (headset only) or $499 bundle (camera + Move controllers) undercut competitors while offering “good enough” VR experiences. Setup required PlayStation Camera and external processing box.
Exclusive Games
Astro Bot Rescue Mission (2018) became PSVR’s killer app, showcasing 3D platforming impossible in traditional games. Resident Evil 7 VR (2017) terrified players with full-game VR support. Beat Saber (2018) exploded on PSVR. Blood & Truth, Farpoint, and Firewall Zero Hour delivered console-exclusive VR experiences.
Technical Limitations
The PSVR’s 1080p OLED display (960x1080 per eye) and 100-degree FOV felt dated versus PC VR headsets. The single PlayStation Camera provided 180-degree tracking only (not 360-degree room-scale). Move controllers lacked analog sticks, limiting gameplay complexity. The external processing box added cable clutter.
PlayStation VR2 (2023)
PSVR2 launched February 22, 2023 for $549 as a PS5-exclusive headset with 4K HDR OLED displays (2000x2040 per eye), eye tracking, haptic feedback, and inside-out tracking eliminating external cameras. Horizon Call of the Mountain showcased next-gen VR graphics. Early sales disappointed (~600K units in 6 months) due to high price, limited games, and waning VR hype.
Legacy
The original PSVR proved console VR viability, selling more units than all PC VR headsets combined (2016-2019). It introduced millions to VR gaming who couldn’t afford PC setups. Sony’s commitment to PSVR2 demonstrated ongoing VR investment despite mainstream hesitancy.
