Marvel’s Spider-Man’s September 2018 release delivered the definitive Spider-Man game, with web-swinging traversal that felt perfect and a story that rivaled the best Spider-Man media.

Traversal Perfection

Insomniac nailed the feel of being Spider-Man. Web-swinging through Manhattan was effortless joy - physics-based, momentum-preserving, endlessly satisfying. Players spent hours just swinging, ignoring missions. The fast-travel existed but felt like cheating yourself of the game’s best feature.

Narrative Surprise

The game featured experienced Peter Parker (23) with established relationships. The story juggled Doc Ock’s villainous turn, Aunt May’s fate, MJ stealth missions, and Miles Morales’ introduction. The ending’s emotional weight (letting Aunt May die to save the city) was Spider-Man’s core dilemma executed perfectly.

Photo Mode Obsession

The game’s photo mode created endless social media content. Players captured dramatic poses mid-swing, recreated movie shots, and shared artistic compositions. #SpiderManPS4 photos flooded Twitter. The game proved photo modes could be marketing engines.

With 13+ million sales and 87 Metacritic, Spider-Man demonstrated superhero games could achieve Arkham-level quality in different settings, and web-swinging traversal was gaming’s most joyful movement.
