Origin & Impact
#SpongeBobMovie (specifically “Mocking SpongeBob”) became 2017’s dominant meme format. The image of SpongeBob hunched over with deranged expression paired with alternating caps text perfectly conveyed mockery.
The format’s genius was universal application—mock anyone’s statement by repeating it in alternating caps. It spread across all social platforms and age groups. The simple visual/text combination needed no explanation.
Mocking SpongeBob joined Distracted Boyfriend as 2017’s defining meme formats. It demonstrated how children’s cartoons provide endless meme material and how text formatting can convey tone perfectly.
