Social Media Strategy Game
Netflix’s The Circle (2020-present) isolated contestants in apartments, communicating only through a social media platform called “The Circle.” Players could be themselves or catfish, building alliances, becoming “Influencers,” and eliminating rivals. Last player standing won $100K.
Based on UK format, the show gamified social media: strategic selfie choices, crafting personas, voice chat reveals testing catfishes. Joey Sasso (Season 1 winner) proved authenticity could win; DeLeesa St. Agathe (Season 2 winner, catfishing as husband “Trevor”) showed strategy triumphs.
The show’s apartment isolation predated pandemic lockdowns (filming 2018-2019), making its 2020 release eerily prescient. Players’ emotional investment in digital-only relationships mirrored real social media dynamics: parasocial connections, performative authenticity, cancel culture mini-dramas.
Celebrity editions (2021-2022) featured Michelle Buteau, Chloe Veitch, and other reality stars, but couldn’t match civilian seasons’ genuine emotions. International versions (Brazil, France, UK) showed universal social media anxieties transcended cultures.
