TherapyIsForEveryone

The rallying cry that mental health support isn’t just for crisis moments — therapy is preventative care, ongoing maintenance, and accessible (ideally) to everyone, not just the privileged or “broken.”

The Message

April 2021: As pandemic mental health struggles peaked, advocates pushed the idea that therapy shouldn’t require hitting rock bottom first.

Just like you go to the dentist for checkups, you should see a therapist for mental health maintenance. The hashtag reframed therapy from reactive to proactive.

Why It Mattered

Stigma reduction: Positioning therapy as universal care, not a last resort for “crazy people.”

Accessibility advocacy: Highlighting how cost, insurance, and lack of providers kept therapy out of reach for many.

Preventative mental health: Addressing small issues before they become crises.

The Reality Check

Therapy ISN’T for everyone (yet). The hashtag highlighted a harsh truth:

  • Average cost: $100-200/session out-of-pocket
  • Insurance barriers: High deductibles, limited coverage, therapists not in-network
  • Provider shortage: Months-long waiting lists in most cities
  • Cultural barriers: Stigma in many communities, lack of culturally competent therapists

The hashtag became both an aspiration and an indictment of the mental healthcare system.

The Discourse

“Everyone should go to therapy” sparked debate:

Pro: Normalizes mental health care, reduces stigma, encourages early intervention

Con: Pathologizes normal human emotions, assumes everyone needs professional help, ignores systemic barriers to access

Impact

By late 2021, employee assistance programs (EAPs) expanded mental health benefits. Employers offered therapy stipends. Telehealth platforms grew.

But the gap between “therapy should be for everyone” and “therapy IS accessible to everyone” remained wide.
