Origin

Created by webcomic artist KC Green as part of his “Gunshow” webcomic series on January 9, 2013. The two-panel comic shows a dog sitting in a burning room saying “This is fine” while sipping coffee, followed by melting from the flames while repeating the phrase.

Viral Breakthrough

Remained relatively obscure until 2016 when it exploded as the perfect representation of denial in crisis situations. The phrase “this is fine” became shorthand for acknowledging disaster while pretending everything is okay.

Cultural Impact

Became the defining meme for political discourse during turbulent times (2016-2023), particularly during Trump presidency, COVID-19 pandemic, climate disasters, and economic crises. Used to express helpless acceptance of chaos.

Merchandising

KC Green partnered with merchandisers to create official “This is Fine” products, earning revenue from the meme’s popularity. The image appeared on everything from coffee mugs to stress balls.

Legacy

Entered the permanent internet lexicon as a phrase and cultural reference. The image remains instantly recognizable and applicable to virtually any crisis situation.
