Kickstarter 2013-07 technology declining
Also known as: TileBluetoothTrackerKeyFinder

The Kickstarter-funded Bluetooth tracker that created the “find my stuff” category before Apple AirTags crushed it overnight.

Crowdfunding Success

Tile launched via Kickstarter in July 2013, raising $2.6 million to create Bluetooth trackers for keys, wallets, and bags. The square tiles ($25-30 each) connected to smartphones, playing sounds when activated and showing last-known locations. The crowd-finding network (other Tile users’ phones detecting lost tiles) added utility. By 2015, Tile had sold millions of units.

Market Leadership

Tile dominated Bluetooth trackers for years. The Tile Mate, Slim, and Pro variants covered different use cases. Integration with Alexa (“Alexa, find my keys”) and Google Assistant expanded utility. By 2020, Tile had sold 35+ million trackers. The company went public via SPAC in 2021, valued at $205 million, predicting continued growth.

AirTags Devastation

Apple AirTags launched April 2021 at $29—cheaper than Tile Pro, with better tracking via Apple’s Find My network (hundreds of millions of iPhones detecting lost tags). AirTags decimated Tile’s business almost overnight. Tile’s market share plummeted. The company was acquired by Life360 in 2022 for $205 million (no premium over SPAC valuation), a fraction of earlier hopes. Tile showed how quickly Apple could destroy third-party accessory markets.
