Tile launched in July 2013 (after crowdfunding campaign) as a Bluetooth tracking device helping users find lost keys, wallets, and bags via smartphone app. The $25-$35 tiles created the item-tracker category, selling 40+ million units by 2021 before Apple’s AirTag disrupted the market in 2021.

Kickstarter Success Story

Tile’s 2013 Kickstarter raised $2.6 million (10x the $250K goal), one of the platform’s biggest hardware successes at the time. The concept was simple: attach small Bluetooth beacon to items, use app to make tile ring, or see last-known location on map.

Early Tiles had limited range (~100 feet) and relied on community finding—if someone else’s Tile app detected your lost Tile, you’d receive anonymous location update. The network effect meant more Tile users increased finding probability for everyone.

Multiple form factors emerged: Tile Mate ($25, keychain-sized), Tile Slim ($30, credit-card thickness for wallets), Tile Pro ($35, louder speaker and longer range), Tile Sticker ($30, adhesive for remotes/cameras). Replaceable batteries (Pro) versus sealed non-replaceable (Mate/Slim) created upgrade cycles.

The AirTag Threat

Apple’s AirTag (April 2021, $29) leveraged one billion iPhone devices for ultra-precise finding using U1 ultra-wideband chip and AR directional guidance. AirTag’s massive network and tighter iOS integration made Tile’s community finding seem outdated overnight.

Tile accused Apple of anti-competitive behavior—limiting Tile’s access to iOS features (Ultra Wideband, always-on Bluetooth location) while giving AirTag full system integration. Tile testified to Congress about Apple’s monopolistic practices, though regulatory action was limited.

Despite AirTag competition, Tile maintained multi-platform advantage (Android support) and diverse form factors. The company pivoted to B2B markets, partnering with Intel, HP, and Bose for embedded tracking in laptops and headphones. In November 2021, Life360 acquired Tile for $205 million, focusing on family safety integration.
