Tokyo Auto Salon is Japan’s largest automotive aftermarket event, held annually in January at Makuhari Messe with over 300,000 attendees, showcasing JDM tuning culture, drift cars, time attack machines, and concept vehicles.

JDM Mecca

TAS is ground zero for Japanese Domestic Market car culture. Tuning houses like HKS, Tomei, Top Secret, RE Amemiya, Rocket Bunny/Pandem, and Liberty Walk unveil their wildest builds: 1,000+ hp Supras, carbon-bodied GT-Rs, Bosozoku-style sedans, and widebody kits that would be illegal in most countries.

Drift Culture Showcase

D1 Grand Prix teams and Formula Drift drivers display competition cars inches from crowds. Engines rev constantly; the smell of race fuel and tire smoke permeates the halls. Booth babes (called “race queens”) pose with builds for photographers—a controversial tradition that’s slowly declining.

Manufacturer Involvement

Major brands like Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru use TAS to preview GRMN, Nismo, Type R, Mazdaspeed, and STI special editions before production. The Toyota GR Supra concept previewed here in 2018, and the Nissan Z Proto debuted in 2020.

Global Influence

Liberty Walk’s widebody aesthetic—massively flared fenders with exposed rivets—went global after TAS debuts. What was once niche Japanese tuning is now mainstream in the U.S., Europe, and Middle East, with Lamborghinis and Ferraris getting the treatment.
