Twitter launched Fleets in November 2020—disappearing tweets inspired by Instagram and Snapchat Stories. The 24-hour posts appeared at the top of timelines in circular bubbles. Twitter hoped Fleets would encourage sharing without permanence anxiety.
Cultural Impact
Fleets were widely mocked from day one. Twitter’s whole identity was the permanent, searchable record. Ephemeral content felt antithetical. Users called them “toots” and joked that nobody asked for this. Unlike Stories on visual platforms, text-based ephemeral posts solved no clear problem.
Fleets also enabled DM slide abuse—users sent unwanted DMs to Fleet viewers. The feature saw low engagement. Eight months after launch, Twitter killed Fleets, admitting failure. The hashtag became shorthand for unnecessary feature cloning and product strategy confusion.
Platform Evolution
Peak usage occurred November 2020-February 2021 during launch and early experimentation. The August 2021 shutdown announcement generated “we told you so” schadenfreude. Fleets joined Google+ and Quibi in the tech failure hall of fame.
