Origin
Twitter launched Moments in October 2015 as a curated news feature allowing users to follow developing stories through collections of tweets. The tab featured editorial curation from Twitter’s team and media partners, attempting to make Twitter more accessible to casual users.
Cultural Impact
Moments represented Twitter’s attempt to solve its onboarding problem—new users found the chronological firehose overwhelming. Curated stories provided entry points. Power users mostly ignored it, preferring their carefully cultivated timelines.
The feature highlighted Twitter’s identity crisis: serve the engaged power users or court mainstream growth? Moments favored the latter. News organizations created Moments for major events. The hashtag tracked both feature adoption and debates about editorial control.
Platform Evolution
Peak usage occurred October 2015-2016 during launch and media partnership expansion. Twitter later opened Moment creation to all users (2016) and eventually de-emphasized the feature, removing the dedicated tab in 2018. It quietly faded as Twitter refocused on core timeline experience.
