League’s Most Toxic Player’s Redemption Arc

Tyler “Tyler1” Steinkamp, a League of Legends streamer notorious for extreme toxicity, received an indefinite ban from Riot Games in April 2016—the only person ever issued a ban-on-sight ID prohibition. His January 2018 unban and Twitch return drew 382,000 concurrent viewers, becoming one of gaming’s most-watched redemption stories and proving reformed behavior could overcome even permabans.

The Tyler1 Problem (2014-2016)

Tyler1 built a following through skilled Draven gameplay and rage content. But his toxicity was extreme: running it down mid (intentionally feeding), flaming teammates constantly, verbal abuse, and creating 20+ accounts after bans. Each account reached high ranks before getting banned, proving skill wasn’t the issue—behavior was.

In April 2016, Riot took unprecedented action: indefinitely banning Tyler1 from League of Legends with a ban-on-sight policy. Any account he created would be banned immediately upon identification. Riot cited him as toxic influence on the community and stated he was “not welcome in League of Legends.”

The Reform Campaign (2016-2018)

Tyler1 continued streaming other games while vocally campaigning for his League unban. He claimed to be reformed, posted apology videos, and demonstrated changed behavior on other platforms. The #FreeTyler1 movement gained momentum, with fans arguing everyone deserved a second chance.

Riot gradually softened their stance. In December 2017, they announced Tyler1 could submit a reformed behavior application. After review, Riot unbanned him on January 1, 2018, citing demonstrated behavior change and maturity.

The Historic Return Stream

Tyler1’s January 6, 2018 return stream broke records: 382,000+ concurrent viewers, the highest non-tournament League stream ever at the time. The stream demonstrated:

  • Reformed behavior (minimal toxicity)
  • Maintained skill (quickly climbed ranks)
  • Massive community support
  • Riot’s willingness to give second chances

The unban validated Riot’s player behavior systems—even the most toxic player could reform if held accountable.

Legacy & Influence

Tyler1 became one of League’s biggest streamers, regularly pulling 20K-50K viewers. His unban proved permabans weren’t always permanent if behavior genuinely changed. The story influenced other games’ approach to toxic players—accountability with redemption path rather than eternal damnation.
